How to Keep Your Homeworking Space Clean

How to Keep Your Homeworking Space Clean

Working from home can be challenging, particularly if you do not have the space which you are accustomed to when working in the office. Whatever space you do have, it is important to keep it clean, as organisation and good hygiene practises are key ways to boost productivity and motivation while at work.

For that energising feeling of a fresh work environment, read our latest blog post below to find out just how to keep your homeworking space clean.

Organise Your Desk

A tidy physical environment promotes an organised mind. Keep the clutter to a minimum and you will have more space to work and less equipment to keep clean. Try not to let your paperwork pile up and only fill your desk with the necessities. Organisation pots or folders can help with keeping your space tidy and means you can keep stationery supplies close to hand.

Clean your Computer Screen

Your home office computer should be cleaned carefully so as to avoid the risk of damage. A solution of one-part distilled water mixed with one-part distilled white vinegar will gently disinfect your computer screen. Use a spray bottle and apply the solution on to a clean microfibre cloth (the softer the better.) Do not spray the solution directly onto your screen as you could risk damaging it.

Ensure your screen is turned off before you apply any cleaning product and wipe the cloth gently over the screen, taking care not to apply too much pressure. Once you have cleaned your screen with the vinegar solution, use a dry cloth to remove any residue. Allow the screen to completely dry before turning your computer back on. You can also use specific screen wipes, which are handy to keep near your desk.

Don’t Eat at your Desk

While it may be tempting to eat your lunch at your desk whilst working at home, food debris can cause a significant problem, especially if it gets in your keyboard. Crumbs and other food remains can get easily stuck in the keyboard and contribute to household germs, not to mention they can leave a nasty smell behind.

A 2016 study even suggests that keyboards have 20,000 times more bacteria than a toilet seat, so keeping your keyboard sanitised is a must. You can sanitise your keyboard with antibacterial wipes or a linen free cloth dipped in isopropyl alcohol.

Eating lunch away from your workspace not only minimises the risk of leaving nasty bacteria on your keyboard but is good for your mental wellbeing too. Although you are working from home, you are still entitled to breaks during your work day and it is important you utilise those breaks to refresh your mind and relax.

Dust your Desk

It is not only food crumbs and bacteria which can lead to an unclean working environment; dust can be an irritant too, especially for those with allergies. Regularly hoovering carpets under your desk and using a dry, lint-free cloth to wipe away any dust is a good place to start. You can also use traditional multi-surface polish to lift dust and leave a shine on your surfaces.

Don’t Forget to Sanitise your Phone

Many of us are using our phones more than ever now that we are working from home. As a hotspot and breeding ground for bacteria, it is important that you clean your phone regularly. Pay particular attention to the mouth and ear pieces as well as the keypad, as they accumulate the highest concentration of bacteria.
