Cleaning Tips for Cold and Flu Season

Cleaning Tips for Cold and Flu Season

The year has just begun and COVID-19 is at the forefront of our minds whilst we’re in the nations third lockdown, but we mustn’t forget that cold and flu season is also in full swing and can kill. While there is no guarantee that you can avoid becoming a victim of cold and flu, learning how to prevent the spread of germs is a sure way to reduce the chances of falling ill or making others unwell, both at home and in the office.

We’ve put together some tips for cleaning your home or workspace so that you can reduce your exposure to illnesses and hopefully avoid cold and flu this season.

Clean Contact Points

As the cold and flu virus spreads through coughs and sneezes, it is most often transmitted through hands and surfaces. As the germs can live on both of these for 24 hours, it is vital to regularly clean contact points throughout the home or work environment.

Some common touch points include:

  • Door handles or locks
  • Light switches
  • Taps and toilet handles
  • Cupboard / Drawer handles
  • Soap pumps
  • Remote controls

If you are in the office, don’t forget about these contact points too:

  • Stair rails
  • Printers, copiers and scanners
  • Keyboards and mice
  • Shared kitchen equipment such as kettles, refrigerator handles etc.
  • Laptop bags and carry cases

Clean your Phone

Research suggests that your mobile phone could, in fact, harbour 10 times more bacteria than a toilet seat. You are likely to touch your phone often throughout the day and are therefore at risk of transferring germs from your hands onto your phone.

To avoid your phone becoming a breeding ground for bacteria, make sure to regularly disinfect it. Both Apple and Samsung advise that you use a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe or Clorox disinfecting wipes. The alcohol quickly evaporates from the surface of your phone and kills the germs present.

You can also use soap and water but be mindful not to risk water damage to your device. Instead, moisten a cloth or paper towel with antibacterial soap, wipe it over the phone and then wipe that off with a damp cloth or paper towel.

Use Steam Power

Steam is a great way to kill germs and can be used on a range of waterproof, sealed surfaces around the home or office. Using a steam cleaner will disinfect your surfaces by removing mites, bacteria and external agents without the need to resort to harsh chemicals and lots of scrubbing.

As steam cleaners are not suitable for all types of surfaces, make sure to check before using so as to avoid the risk of damage.

Wash your Cleaning Supplies

It is important not only to clean objects and surfaces around you, but also to ensure that your cleaning supplies remain hygienic, so as to minimise the risk of spreading germs.

Whilst cotton cloths can easily be washed in the washing machine, microfibre cloths are a little trickier. To properly clean your microfibre cloths, wash them thoroughly in warm water and avoid any harsh fabric softeners that will disrupt the dust-attracting qualities of the fibres.

Hand Washing

An obvious way to minimise the risk of spreading the cold and flu virus is to maintain the best practise when it comes to hand washing. Wash hands regularly for 20 seconds and with antibacterial hand soap.

As cold and flu spread through contact, washing your hands will ensure that the surfaces you do touch are less likely to become areas where germs and illnesses are spread.
